Your treatment room is one of the most intimate, vulnerable spaces your client will ever enter. What happens when that vulnerability triggers something deeper than skin?

Most esthetics training covers anatomy, chemistry, and technique. Almost none of it covers what happens when a client’s nervous system perceives a threat during a facial. Low lighting. Eyes closed. Lying down. Unfamiliar touch from someone standing above them. These conditions can mirror the dynamics of traumatic experiences — and most practitioners have no tools to recognize or respond when that happens.

You’ve already felt it in the room. The client who goes completely still in a way that doesn’t feel relaxed. The one who agrees to everything and leaves a glowing review — and never rebooks. The one who snaps at you about pressure that isn’t heavy. The one who makes an excuse to leave mid-service. You noticed. You just didn’t have language for what you were seeing.

This course gives you that language — and the tools to respond.

What You’ll Learn

01
Understanding Trauma & the Body
45–60 Minutes
  • What trauma is — and what it isn’t.
  • Big-T and little-t trauma, and why both show up in the treatment room.
  • The autonomic nervous system explained simply.
  • Polyvagal theory in plain language.
  • The window of tolerance and what it looks like in real life.
  • Why the sensory conditions of the treatment room matter.
02
The Four Trauma Responses in the Treatment Room
60–75 Minutes
  • Fight: tension, defensiveness, pushing back.
  • Flight: restlessness, urgency, wanting to shorten the service.
  • Freeze: blank affect, silence, dissociation.
  • Fawn: over-agreeing, over-apologizing, saying yes when the body says no.
  • How to recognize each response and respond safely.
03
Trauma-Informed Practices & Protocols
45–60 Minutes
  • Trauma-sensitive intake language.
  • Environmental audits for lighting, sound, scent, and setup.
  • Creating a client Safety Menu.
  • Ongoing consent vs one-time consent.
  • Reading body language instead of relying only on words.
  • How to debrief and refer without overstepping scope.
04
Scope of Practice & Practitioner Self-Care
30–45 Minutes
  • The line between trauma-informed care and trauma treatment.
  • Scope, ethics, and client safety.
  • Recognizing when a client’s response activates your own nervous system.
  • Compassion fatigue, vicarious stress, and regulation between clients.
  • Your personal trauma-informed practice plan.
